New Watch (Neighbourhood Watch)

NEW-WATCH is a Newham SNB project funded by MOPAC. The aim is for the NEW-WATCH scheme to work across all Wards in Newham, which have been devoid of such schemes for many years and in severe need of such a mechanism for engaging, communicating effectively and encouraging the very diverse communities to participate in the fight against increasing crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.

NEW WATCH will create a network of Neighbourhood Watches across Newham and involve a partnership arrangement between Newham SNB and the NE BCU as well as support by the Newham Council. NEW WATCH will facilitate the provision of much needed signage for display on street furniture in all areas where the scheme operates. The MPS will provide window stickers to residents of the scheme. Local Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) will engage with their local ward communities to promote and develop the NEW-WATCH scheme. They will highlight the benefits of the scheme and the positive outcomes it has in reducing and preventing crime. They will work with Safer Schools Officers to engage younger members of the scheme to help build and facilitate engagement with the police and inspire community spirit in the younger generation.

The underlying Aims of the NEW WATCH scheme are:

* To create new NEW-WATCH schemes across the Borough of Newham

in order to reduce & prevent crime.

* To support schemes by providing signage promoting the scheme in order to reduce & prevent crime.

* Allow local residents to engage with the police, partner agencies, local authority and other key community groups through a common purpose and give a positive impression of the scheme and its benefits.

* Allow younger residents to engage with police and the NEW-WATCH scheme therefore building community spirit and help develop community engagement.

A Pilot approach is to be shortly adopted at:

1)Plaistow West & Canning Town East Wards

2)Plaistow North Ward

3)Custom House Ward.
